God calls us to guard the heart with discernment without allowing fear, bitterness, or disappointment to make it hard.
Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.
Proverbs tells me to guard the heart, but guarding is not the same as hardening. A guarded heart watches what it allows to take root. A hardened heart closes itself off. Christian living calls for discernment without surrendering tenderness, hope, or love.
That matters because I cannot give what I refuse to receive from God. If fear, bitterness, or cynicism takes over, my heart becomes less responsive to His grace. But when I remain open to Christ, He can fill me with what I need to give to others. Trusting God means allowing Him to protect, correct, and soften the heart at the same time.
“True knowledge comes from God, and returns again to God. His children are to receive that they may give again.” — Ellen G. White, This Day With God, September 1; Manuscript 108, September 1, 1898.
Practical Application
Notice one place where fear or disappointment is tempting you to shut down. Ask God to guard your heart without allowing it to become hard.
Closing Prayer
Lord, guard my heart from bitterness, fear, and cynicism while keeping me open to Your grace. Help me receive from You so I have something true and loving to give to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
