Represent Christ in Every Circumstance — Sabbath, June 27

Happy Sabbath!

"For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned."
— Romans 12:3 (NRSV)

I love that this week ends here, on the Sabbath, with a verse about sober judgment rather than striving. It feels like exactly the right place to land.

Looking back over the last several days, I've been thinking about integrity, mercy, stewardship, humility — and if I'm honest, by Friday I usually feel the weight of all the ways I fall short of those things. The Sabbath doesn't ask me to fix that weight through more effort. It asks me to set it down.

Paul's words today aren't about thinking less of myself, exactly — they're about thinking of myself accurately. Not inflated, not falsely humble, just honestly aware of who I am because of grace, not because of what I've accomplished this week.

This quote feels like the quiet summary of everything I've been wrestling with this week:

"Live for something besides self. If your motives are pure and unselfish, if you are looking out to do work that somebody must do, to show kind attentions and to do courteous acts, you are unconsciously building your own monument. In the home life, in the church, and in the world you are representing Christ in character."

"Unconsciously building your own monument." That phrase relieves some of the pressure I put on myself. I don't have to engineer a legacy. I just have to keep choosing, day by day, to live for something besides myself — and let whatever monument that builds take care of itself.

Today I want to actually rest in that, not just read about it. Not striving to represent Christ well enough, but resting in Him and trusting that representing Him flows naturally out of that rest.

Heavenly Father, happy Sabbath. Thank You for this day of rest and reflection. As I look back on this week, thank You for teaching me about integrity, mercy, stewardship, and humility — not as a checklist, but as a slow shaping of character. Help me rest fully in Your grace today, and let my character, not my effort, represent Christ to everyone I meet. In Jesus' name, Amen.
